A short but interesting discussion on The Andrew Marr Show last Sunday, in which Marr interviewed George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Ed Balls, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. The interviews about the economy were predictably turgid, so we'll spare you those. But at the end of the programme there was a short piece -- less than three minutes long -- about equality. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, recently gave a speech in which he called for an expansion of the grammar school system on the grounds that for many years they'd provided a way for bright children from poor backgrounds to gain a first-class education. Early in the discussion (00:17 onwards) George Osborne stated the following: 'Where I think there is increasingly common agreement across the political spectrum i...

Across a plaza, I saw a girl. For me, it was love at first sight. From the moment I got to know her, I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. In the years ahead, whether I was changing baby diapers in Caracas, Venezuela, building a business in Miami or leading a state in Tallahassee, Columba has been with me, my best friend in all of life’s challenges and joys. Together, we have built a family with three wonderful kids: Noelle, George P., and Jeb Jr. Each of our kids has given us blessings, and now they are giving us grandkids who seem to think I’m their personal climbing gym. They call me “Gampy,” and, together with their grandmother, they keep me honest. I’m never as happy as I am when I’m with my family, and that’s been true all my life. So when I became governor, I could be pretty relentless about getting the people’s business done. We defended and protected the most vulnerable in our society. I have always believed that as a nation, we reveal our values by how we govern those moments when life is most vulnerable. So I rolled up my sleeves, and working with the state Legislature, we enacted reforms that helped businesses, saving hundreds of millions of dollars a year– keeping jobs in the state, and making sure that Florida’s economy could work for everyone. My Administration attacked issues like that with the same focus. We cut taxes every year. Cut the state workforce by 13,000. One year, we enacted six laws aimed at protecting our citizens’ right to bear arms. My opponents called me a lot of names, but the one I liked best was Veto Corleone. I vetoed over 2,500 line items in the state’s budget. We assessed the problem, took on the challenges and gave people the freedom to be creative and come up with solutions. When I was governor, I always believed doing the people’s work was a great joy and an incredible responsibility. I knew that as governor, I had the power to make things happen—not just give speeches. At the beginning of my second term, a friend of mine gave me a clock, which was ticking off the seconds, minutes, hours and days until my term of office was to end. It was a pretty good reminder that my ability to serve Florida was limited only by two things: time and how I used it. There were always more people to help. Jobs to create—we created 1.3 million of them. Small businesses were starting—we had more than 80,000 small businesses start in Florida when I was in office. We had prosperity to launch—and Florida’s households were earning over $1,000 more per year when I left office than when I began. We had a budget to balance, and with the help of $2 billion in vetoes, we achieved a AAA-bond rating. That is a record I am proud to claim. That is a record I would like to bring to Washington, D.C. And that’s why I am running for President. I’m Jeb Bush, and I want your vote. Join Team Jeb today: http://jeb.cm/1SDqVvt

A Diverse workforce offers numerous benefits to business in the UK and beyond. Find out more about Marshall E-Learning Consultancy's Diversity courses here: http://www.marshallacm.co.uk/category/e-learning-products/diversity/ We live in an increasingly diverse society, which is very often reflected in the workplace. It is of course important that we always respond with the appropriate sensitivity to this diversity, and learners in all workplace settings will reflect it in their gender, age, class, sexuality, race, religion, disability and ethnicity. Equality is about eliminating discrimination and prejudice in a society (from a workplace society to the larger aggregate community) where everybody has the same opportunities to progress and achieve their full potential, regardless of their heritage or background. In essence, equality is about treating everybody as if they were the same. Diversity, on the other hand, though sometimes used or understood rather confusingly as a synonymous term to ‘equality’, actually means ‘difference’. Diversity is about recognising individuals’ differences, and placing positive values on those differences within societies and workplace environments. Despite the world becoming so highly diverse, there are still many companies which have not done so, and indeed this can often hinder the value locked within an exclusive culture. Today, promoting diversity is simply required of an organisation. However, although many claim their unwavering support, the reality is actually far less in evidence. A global survey conducted by Deloitte University Press found that only 1 in 5 companies believe that they are truly ‘ready’ to embrace diversity and all of its benefits. Why the massive (80%) short falling? Well, there is a view that diversity compliance is just that – a regulatory box to be ticked. This, unfortunately, simply isn’t good enough to instil the sense of urgency required to make a more meaningful move into a true environment of workplace diversity that is matched by its efforts for equality. What is needed is a better understanding of the benefits that a truly diverse workforce can inject into the value of a company. Online diversity training is one means by which a company can begin to tackle this problem and get to grips with fully understanding what they are missing, from failure to implement diversity measures into their workforce. Indeed, far beyond being simply a tick-box exercise, embracing diversity and utilising individuals’ differences for the overall good of an organisation can make the difference between success and failure in today’s business world, which is now as competitive as it is diverse. An individual’s feeling of being treated equitably is the true measure of a company’s commitment to diversity. This means that as an organisation, you have to communicate and connect with each employee not only as a member of the workforce, but as an individual. Indeed, this realisation can actually be the driving force of a company’s success, when individuals’ unique attributes are put to a use that not only suits the company, but also the employee her/himself. “Not everyone who gets into a business is in the place where they will ultimately be the most successful or happy in their career,” says Stephen Shea of Ernst & Young. “ Sometimes their unique attributes will lead them to be far more successful [which, in turn, equates to the success of the company] in a different part of the business or a different pursuit, and it’s okay to tell them that.” By committing to building a culture of diversity where employees are making the most out their skills and experiences – i.e. their differences – a company will almost invariably find that productivity, morale and indeed success can be optimised to produce the best possible outcomes for all involved. In theory this is a very simple equation, and the only real obstacle in making it a more encompassed reality is in engendering the commitment from organisations to make it so. Diversity in the workplace e-learning courses are the exact tool your company needs to start building towards this success. They will teach you and your workforce not only what it means to accept the concepts of diversity, equality and equal opportunities, but why these things are important, and how their successful integration can move your company beyond mere compliance to the rules, but towards a culture of unlimited inclusion and success. Early in the discussion (00:17 onwards) George Osborne stated the following: 'Where I think there is increasingly common agreement across the political spectrum is that you can't achieve equality of outcomes, but you should be able to achieve equality of opportunity.' It's ironic that the politician with the most power to control how taxpayers' money is employed is doing nothing to cut back 'equality of outcomes' initiatives when the outcomes in question are gender outcomes, and nor are any of his colleagues. Indeed the Conservative-led coalition has proven keener to drive and finance those initiatives than the three preceding Labour administrations in which odious gender feminists such as Harriet Harman were at their most influential.
